STMicro STM32WBA5MMG – A Bluetooth LE 6.0, Zigbee 3.0, and OpenThread module in 12.5×8 mm SiP

The STMicroelectronics STM32WBA5MMG is a compact (12.5 x 8 mm), ultra-low-power wireless module with support for Bluetooth LE 6.0, Zigbee 3.0, and OpenThread protocols, making it suitable for IoT, smart home, healthcare, industrial, and wearable applications. Based on the STM32WBA55UG microcontroller and designed for applications for IoT, smart home, healthcare, industrial, and wearable applications.

Key features include an Arm Cortex-M33 CPU with TrustZone, 1MB Flash with ECC, 128KB SRAM, and more. Security features include hardware encryption, secure firmware installation, tamper detection, and cryptographic accelerators. The module integrates an antenna (or supports external), supports up to +10 dBm Tx power, and features high-sensitivity receivers for robust wireless communication. On top of that, it requires no RF expertise for board integration and works with 2-layer PCBs to reduce costs. These features make this suitable for developers needing a compact, power-efficient wireless solution with rich protocol support and security features.

The easiest way to get started with the STM32WBA5MMG module is by using the B-WBA5M-WPAN connectivity expansion board, which integrates the wireless module and adds several useful features. It includes a 256 Kbit serial I2C EEPROM for storage and a set of MEMS sensors, such as a high-accuracy temperature sensor, a 3D accelerometer, and a 3D gyroscope. The board offers an M.2 E-Key connector for host interface, supporting UART, SPI, I2C, and SAI interfaces along with power signals. For development and debugging, it provides an STDC14 debug connector (CN3) compatible with the STLINK-V3SET debugger. Additional features include a user LED, user and reset push buttons, and flexible power supply options via USB Type-C or through the M.2 E-Key connector.

The STM32WBA5MMG module is supported by the STM32CubeWBA MCU Package, which provides a completely royalty-free protocol stack, along with software libraries and example code. These resources are compatible with STM32CubeIDE as well as third-party IDEs such as IAR Embedded Workbench and MDK-ARM, making development more accessible. The module is designed for a wide range of applications, including healthcare, personal trackers, gaming, and accessories.

Previously we have wrtien about NXP RW612 moduel which is a tri-radio wireless MCU integrating Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) 5.4, and 802.15.4 radios. We hae also wrien aobut BL54L15 and BL54H20 Bluetooth LE modules from Laird Connectivity which are based on Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF54 and support Bluetooth LE 5.4, 802.15.4, and NFC.

The STM32WBA5MMG Bluetooth, Zigbee, OpenThread module is priced at $5.40 for 10K-unit orders, while the B-WBA5M-WPAN expansion board costs $37.51 each. More details are available on the product pages.
